UC learning Commons: Supplemental Instruction Leader (FAll 2019)
The fall semester of my third year, I was employed by the Learning Commons at UC, which provides centralized academic support for students of the University. I worked as a Supplemental Instruction Leader (SIL) for the Genetics (BIOL2083) course for sophomore biology majors. As a SIL for this course, my main job was to hold two hour-and-a half review sessions per week for the students of the class, which involved making my own review materials and planning collaborative activities. In addition, I also attended all class lectures, working with students to solve in-class problems, held an office hour every week, and regularly met with the professor of the course and other SILs. This job was also considered a campus internship, as it was connected to the INT1000 class, which allows workers of the Learning Commons to associate their position with professional skills development. During this experience, I developed many cross-cutting skills: leading my SI sessions allowed me to grow my public-speaking abilities, creating worksheets and activities helped me practice innovation and creativity, and working with students challenged me to approach the course content from different approaches and to tailor my teaching style to that of the student. In conjunction with the INT1000 course, I was able to further explore how these skills could relate to my professional development, as well as how to set goals to monitor my progress. Below, you will find a link to one of the worksheets I developed for my review sessions, which shows how I developed organization and planning skills during this experience.
